French Black Copper Marans eggs

I absolutely love my FBCMs! Not only are they stunning birds with beautiful shiny plumage, but they lay the darkest eggs on the farm. Every year I take a picture of the eggs to show the progression of color. I always try to include a familiar object in the picture. The photographer in me says this helps the viewer correctly gauge the color even though various computer screens may be calibrated differently. The rest of me just hears 'blah blah blah' when that photographer chick starts talking. ;-)

Every year I choose a breeder for new stock to add to the flock. I always consider egg color in this choice. My goal is to have a flock with the darkest possible egg color while still maintaining breed standards. We've been getting better every year. (you can see 2011's eggs on this post I always think there is room for improvement, but I just love the picture this year! What do you think?

  1. Their eggs are so gorgeous aren't they? We have two cuckoo marans and I love the egg color they produce, those ours aren't quite as dark as yours!

    1. They are! I've had Blue Marans also and their eggs are about the same color as the Cuckoo. Still very pretty!

  2. The eggs are beautiful. I haven't seen Marano eggs before. I read that they were dark brown. Thanks so much for sharing. Now I have a real appreciation for the colour!

  3. I'm raising 24 rare breed chicks right now and not sure what I've got yet -- but I do hope I have one of these hens! Those eggs are works of art!

    1. Have fun with them! FBCM chicks are all black with yellow on their bellies and faces. Kinda like little penguins. I hope you have one!

  4. My daughter has started raising chickens. I will have to tell her about the French Black Copper Marans. Last year at Thanksgiving we had a dozen chicks at our house because my daughter had just incubated a batch of eggs.

  5. I have three FBCMs and the eggs are so beautiful. They're the loudest hens in the coop - are yours noisy too?

  6. How awesome, we buy eggs from an Amish farmer that are dark brown and I wondered what breed of chicken they must have.

    1. They are probably Marans eggs. If they have an orange tint to them they might be a Wellsummer. Wellsummers lay a terracotta colored egg. Still very pretty. Hatch some and see what you get! ;-)
